Saturday: Record Turnout Expected for Hands-On Disaster Training

Approximately 150 Pasadena residents from City Council District 4 will get free disaster-preparedness training on Saturday, March 3, in a record turnout for a Fire Department Pasadena Emergency Response Team session, said Lisa Derderian, Emergency Management Coordinator for the Pasadena Fire Department.

“This is a great opportunity for Pasadena residents to get actual hands-on training and be better prepared when a natural disaster occurs,” Derderian said Friday. “They will learn how to put out fires, rescue disaster survivors from rubble, and administer potentially life-saving emergency medical help.”

As residents learned following December’s hurricane-force windstorm, individuals and families may have to be their own “self-sufficient first responders” for up to 72 hours. The enrollment of 150 in Saturday’s PERT (Pasadena Emergency Response Team) Boot Camp is the highest yet, prompting organizers to create a waiting list for the first time.

“We’ve done this in different districts within the city, but this one has the largest number of sign-ups we’ve ever had,” Derderian said. “We’ve called on extra personnel and equipment so we expect this training session with be a great opportunity for residents to be prepared.”

According to Derderian, Pasadena residents will be taking part in hands-on training by emergency personnel including search and rescue techniques using hand tools, power tools, and pry bars to lift heavy objects. Fire department personnel will also teach how to give disaster medical assistance including bandaging, triaging, and immobilization techniques.

Tomorrow’s PERT Boot Camp is a condensed version of the 12-hour PERT program. It is designed for persons 18 and up, and is sponsored by District 4 Councilmember Gene Masuda. The course is provided by the Pasadena Fire Department at no cost to those participating.

“We haven’t scheduled the next one because it all depends on several things, including the response we get to each training session,” said Derderian. “This is not funded by the Department of Homeland Security. We just want to help our residents be prepared when an emergency happens.”

The training will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Church of The Nazarene, 3700 East Sierra Madre Blvd. in Pasadena.
