Recreation and Parks Commission Approves Installation of Memorial Bench and Plaque in the Arroyo Seco for Road Collision Victim Theo Emerson

The Recreation and Parks Commission on Tuesday approved the installation of a memorial and plaque in the Arroyo Seco in honor of Theodore “Theo” Emerson, a nine-year-old boy who was tragically killed in a car collision in July 2021.

Jane and Alex Emerson, Theodore’s parents, submitted a proposal to install a memorial bench and plaque near Teddy’s Post for their son.

The plaque will read, “In loving memory of Theodore Frederick Emerson, June 23, 2012 – July 25, 2022”. The family has committed to paying all costs associated with the installation.

City documents said Theo participated in Biocitizen, a hiking program that frequents the trails of Pasadena.

“He spent countless hours playing with friends and family in the Arroyo Seco and along the Gabrielino Trail,” the city staff report read.
The City has evaluated the request of the Emerson family based on the following criteria: appropriateness, compatibility, impact on park use, aesthetics, maintenance, and safety.

The Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Services found that the request is consistent with the Public Monument Policy. According to the staff report, the proposed location also does not obstruct any recreational activity within the trail.

“I just wanted to say I’m sure we all express our sincere condolences to the Emerson family,” Commissioner Tim Martinez said. “There’s no better place for Theo than Teddy’s Post. I’m fully supportive and I’m glad that they are able to use some of our public park land to help them heal.”
