Rep. Chu Reintroduces DIPLOMA Act to Help Children Succeed Outside the Classroom

Thursday, Rep. Judy Chu (CA-27) reintroduced the Developing Innovative Partnerships and Learning Opportunities that Motivate Achievement (DIPLOMA) Act. The DIPLOMA Act provides grants for states for local services to address the comprehensive needs of all students, both in and out of the classroom. Rep. Chu released the following statement:

“As a teacher for 20 years, I know that an education is the best way to future opportunity. But at the same time, I have seen from firsthand experience that there are many things that affect a student’s performance other than inside the classroom. For instance, it is almost impossible for a child to pay attention and learn if they are hungry or sick. If we truly want our students to succeed, we need to provide the resources necessary. Education is not one size fits all. We have seen incredibly successful models from around the country that have closed the achievement gap by engaging families and communities. The DIPLOMA Act will make student success possible by investing in our children, our communities, and our future.”

The grants provided by the DIPLOMA Act will be used to support services like tutoring, health care, and social supports.
