Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Pasadena) has named Pasadena Heritage founding member Claire Bogaard as one of 15 inspiring women from communities in the 28th Congressional District to be honored as 2020 Women of the Year.

The 28th District includes portions of Pasadena as well as Atwater Village, Burbank, Echo Park, Elysian Valley, Glendale, Hollywood, Hollywood Hills, La Canada Flintridge, La Crescenta, Los Feliz, Montrose, Silver Lake, Tujunga, and West Hollywood.

“Every year in March, in honor of Women’s History Month, my office hosts an event to honor our district’s Women of the Year,” Schiff said in a statement announcing the awards. “Unfortunately, we had to postpone our celebration due to Coronavirus, but I wanted to make sure these outstanding women get the recognition they deserve. They are all pillars of our communities and I thank them for their invaluable service.”

Claire is married to Pasadena Mayor Emeritus Bill Bogaard.

They have four adult children, Michele, Jeannine, Joseph, and Matthew.

The family moved to Pasadena in the early 1970s after spending two years in Morocco.

Claire has been with Pasadena Heritage since the organization was established in 1977. She sat as Executive Director of the group in 1980 and retired in 1994 after 14 years on the job, although she stayed on in an advisory capacity. She was active in the campaign against the 710 North Gap closure project which eventually led to a state law signed in 2019 effectively halting the project from any further consideration.

Claire also served on many other local organizations and committees, including as an Advisor and Trustee for the National Trust for Historic Preservation, Advisory Committee for the Restoration of Pasadena City Hall, and the Neighborhood Associations’ Board of Directors.

In addition, Bogaard served on the Board of the West Pasadena Residents’ Association for several years.

The other 14 2020 Women of the Year in the 28th Congressional District include Flordelina “Lenni” Lara of Atwater Village, Brenda Burroughs of Burbank, Meymuna Hussein-Cattan of Echo Park, Janet Workman of Elysian Valley, Susana Reyes of Glendale, Shannon Geaney of Hollywood, Tami Kagan-Abrams of Hollywood Hills, Barbara Weber of La Canada Flintridge, Mary O’Keefe of La Crescenta, Alexis Sanchez of Los Feliz, Victoria Malone of Montrose, Coralyn AndresTaylor of Silver Lake, Dr. Ani Halabi of Tujunga, and Esther Baum of West Hollywood.

During Women’s History Month in 2017, State Senator Anthony J. Portantino (D-La Cañada Flintridge) honored her as one of 10 exemplary Women of the Year from Senate District 25.
