District 5 Councilmember Jess Rivas has earned the endorsement of Pasadena Mayor Victor Gordo.

Gordo resigned from the seat after his successful campaign for mayor.

“I am proud to endorse Councilmember Jessica Rivas in her campaign for City Council District 5,” Gordo said.

“Councilmember Rivas has been responsive to the needs and concerns of all residents of District 5. As former councilmember and current resident of District 5, I am confident that Jessica Rivas will continue to represent the people of our district with dedication, compassion, and enthusiasm.”

Rivas was appointed in February by a unanimous vote of the City Council to fill the District 5 seat left vacant by Gordo’s election. According to a campaign statement, since being appointed, she has championed such issues as affordable housing and public safety and has prioritized being responsive and accessible to residents.

Rivas announced her candidacy in September among a small group of supporters.

“I am honored to have the endorsement and support of Mayor Gordo and look forward to continuing our work to improve quality of life for all residents of District 5 and our city as a whole,” Rivas said.

Rivas previously served in the Army Reserve and on city commissions. She also served on the Washington Square Neighborhood Association board.

“I am confident that those of us who live in District 5 are in good hands. As a colleague, Councilmember Rivas has ably and quickly become a strong contributor to the City Council as we navigate through the complicated issues facing our city,” Gordo said.

“Her experience at all levels of government and as a working parent brings a unique and invaluable perspective to the council. More than ever, as we transition to a new city manager and police chief, our city needs the leadership and perspective that Councilmember Rivas brings to the dais. I strongly endorse Jess Rivas to continue serving our city as the District 5 councilmember.”

The official nomination period for the June 7 election opens on Feb. 14.
