Starting Friday, Oct. 28 at 10:00 a.m. tickets go on sale for the 2023 Major League Soccer season opener in thec Rose Bowl.

For the opener, LA Galaxy will face the Los Angeles Football Club (LAFC) in a historic clash at the Rose Bowl Stadium on Saturday, February 25, 2023.

The Rose Bowl, which was home to the LA Galaxy from 1996 to 2002, will become the biggest stage for Los Angeles’ marquee soccer rivalry in the 2023 MLS season.

The LA Galaxy played their first-ever match at the Rose Bowl Stadium in a 2-0 win over the San Jose Clash on Sept. 29, 1996. But, in 2003, the club moved to Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson.

For LAFC, it will be the first time they’re playing at the historic Rose Bowl, and this El Trafico clash will officially be an “away” fixture for LAFC, meaning they may not need to play the Galaxy in Carson in league play next year, according to a Los Angeles Football Club community on SB Nation

SB Nation also reported that the game on Feb. 25 has the potential to break the all-time single MLS game attendance mark, set in March when Charlotte FC played their first-ever home game at Bank of America Stadium, with 73,019 in attendance.

The Rose Bowl’s capacity fluctuates in the 88,000 to 94,000 range for most events these days; even if it manages 80,000 on game day, that will still smash the previous record.

The match also starts a multiyear partnership between MLS and Apple; fans around the world will be able to watch it on the Apple TV app, which is available on Apple devices, as well as on smart TVs, streaming devices from Roku, Amazon, and Google, game consoles, and the web at www.tv.apple.com.

In September, LA Galaxy President Chris Klein said they’re excited to write a new chapter “in the storied soccer legacy of Los Angeles” as they kick off the 2023 campaign against intercity rival LAFC.

“We have a great history at the most legendary sports venue in the United States and know this will be a great spectacle for fans as we place one of the most exciting new rivalries in the world on LA’s biggest stage,” Klein said.

The season opener marks the 17th meeting between the Galaxy and LAFC across all competitions; LA Galaxy leads the all-time series 7-4-5. In three matches played across all competitions against LAFC during the 2022 campaign, the Galaxy held a 2-1-0 record.

“This rivalry has, from day one, delivered an energy and electricity that together with incredible moments and memories on the pitch, has established it among the most engaging not only in Los Angeles but across MLS,” Larry Freedman, LAFC Co-President and Chief Business Officer, said. “It is only fitting that we are now taking it to one of the most iconic venues in all of sports.”

MLS will announce the entire 2023 MLS regular season schedule, with kickoff times and broadcast details, at a later date.

Tickets to the season opener on Feb. 25 will go on sale to the general public on Friday, Oct. 28 at 10 a.m. Fans may sign up for additional presale information at https://rosebowlstadium.formstack.com/forms/lagalaxy_lafc
