The Pasadena Health Department Wednesday reported the largest single-day increase in the number of local Coronavirus cases since reporting began.

According to a report from Public Information Officer Lisa Derderian there were 80 new cases, more than doubling the highest previously reported one-day total of 36 back on May. 12

The new cases represent an 11 percent rise in the total number of Pasadena cases, now at 784.

There were also three deaths, two of whom were in a long term health care facility, and one who was a community resident. The deaths raise the total number of local deaths to 77. The dead ranged from 49 to 102, and all had underlying health conditions.

Pasadena could begin to see larger numbers of reported cases, as more test results become available.

Said Derderian, “I think it’s safe to say that the larger number of positive cases reported today are the result of a backlog of reporting from the Rose Bowl (testing site).”

Health care workers are currently testing about 400 patients a day at the Rose Bowl, so the Health Department received a larger set of new numbers, she explained.

“We could see that on and off for the next several weeks, too,” Derderian added.

New testing brings forth higher numbers, and perhaps more cases, she said.

“And this is what we want,” she continued. “We want the expanded testing so people have the ability, even with just mild symptoms, to be able to get tested. We really want to encourage people to sign up and get tested there. Plus there are several locations in Pasadena that are available through private healthcare providers.”

Derderian also pointed out that, “There’s an abundance of testing out there now, that we want to encourage people to do, because those numbers will really dictate a lot of our recovery and reopening phases.”

The number of people tested in Pasadena also affect the overall L.A. County numbers said Derderian, since residents from all over the region could be tested at the Rose Bowl site, but only Pasadena residents are reported by the Pasadena Health Department.

Derderian also reminded residents, with the upcoming Memorial Day Weekend approaching, to avoid gatherings and stay within their immediate households.

“We don’t want people to get a little too lax,” she said.

Free COVID-19 testing outside the Rose Bowl is available through the County to all residents, whether or not you are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms.

Priority for the same or next day testing is given to people with symptoms, such as fever, cough, shortness of breath, chills, muscle pain, headaches, sore throat, or a new loss of sense of smell.

Testing is also prioritized for certain critical front-line workers who interact with the public while working.

Testing is by appointment only. For more click here.
