The S. Mark Taper Foundation has donated $30,000 to fund The Laurel Foundation’s 2015 support programs for children, youth and families affected by HIV and AIDS. This marks a renewed partnership with The Laurel Foundation, which celebrates its 23rd anniversary this year, as the S. Mark Taper Foundation was one of the first to partner with Camp Laurel Foundation (now dba The Laurel Foundation), in 1995.

“Long-term supporting partners such as the S. Mark Taper Foundation allow us to maintain our programs to help families affected by AIDS over the long haul which is critical to their well-being and personal growth. They were one of the first Foundations to believe in our mission and help us to create the organization we have sustained today. Many of the children we serve still live in secrecy and cannot open up to their peers about the disease. The Laurel Foundation’s programs are the one place where they can just be a kid, take their medications without having to hide them and just be normal.” Said Margot Anderson, the Founder and CEO.

About The Laurel Foundation

The Laurel Foundation’s mission is to empower children, youth and families living with HIV and AIDS by providing a diverse range of educational and support programs in an emotionally and physically safe and trusting environment. The Laurel Foundation, based in Pasadena, annually helps more than 500 low-income, at-risk, needy participants living primarily in Southern California.

To accomplish its mission, The Laurel Foundation programs consist of resident camps, mentorships, day programs and support programs. Each program aims to eradicate the pain and isolation associated with HIV and AIDS by teaching participants the important life skills (e.g., independence, trust, problem solving) needed to overcome the adversity of HIV and AIDS. In addition, programs focus on building social support systems with peers, developing bonds with volunteers who serve as crucial role models, and educating participants on health life choices and the consequences of at-risk behaviors. All programs support social and emotional development, boost self-esteem, and help participants reach their full potential in life.
