The Pasadena League of Women Voters Pasadena Area and the Chamber of Commerce will host a forum featuring candidates for the Board of Education forum from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday via ZOOM.
This year, there are three open school board seats.
In District 2, Jennifer Hall Lee, Wayne Hammack and Mike Crowley are competing for the seat held by PUSD Board member Roy Boulghorjian, who did not file nominating papers for re-election.
In District 4, Scott Harden is challenging School Board President Patrick Cahalan.
In District 6, Milena Albert, Priscilla Hernandez, Tina Wu Fredericks, and Crystal Czubernat are squaring off for the board seat held by Larry Torres. Torres has announced he is not seeking re-election.
Board districts in the Pasadena Unified School District do not conform to City Council districts. The school district includes Altadena and Sierra Madre.
In order to comply with the state’s Voter Participation Rights Act, the school district changed its election system from at-large to district only. The election is scheduled for Nov. 3.
This year’s election will be a plurality election, meaning whichever candidate gets the most votes wins.
The winners will have to contend with tough issues, including declining enrollment and a plan to reopen schools. Students have been practicing distance learning since March. A spate of recent school closures has left some local parents unhappy.
The questions will be presented to the candidates by a moderator. Submit questions to forums@lwv-pa.org.
