Shortly after Pasadena’s Health Officer declared a public health emergency Wednesday morning  to help better prepare for a possible outbreak of the Coronavirus, and before the Monrovia Unified School District sent deep cleaning crews to disinfect Clifton Middle School Wednesday night after a school parent came in contact with a person exposed to the Novel Coronavirus, Pasadena Unified School District Superintendent Brian McDonald released the following statement.

Dear Pasadena Unified Community,

The City of Pasadena Public Health Department has declared a local public health emergency as a proactive step to more effectively prepare our community to respond to COVID-19 (previously referred to as the “coronavirus”) and prepare for community spread. There are no confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Pasadena.

The Pasadena Unified School District will continue to work closely with Pasadena Public Health in a coordinated effort to address the many issues that COVID-19 presents. PUSD is updating protocols and preparing plans for virtual learning in the event of a prolonged emergency of any kind, including COVID-19.

The well-being of PUSD students and staff is our top priority.  Our Health Programs personnel will remain in constant ongoing communication with Public Health to stay current on all of the many developing aspects of the flu and COVID-19.

We will share with you any developments that affect our students, staff, families, schools, and our district. The most current information on PUSD’s response to COVID-19 is posted at pusd.us.

In the meantime, as a reminder, the most important thing we can all do is to practice good hygiene habits, including staying home if you feel sick – and the best prevention against any virus is to wash our hands often.

Sincerely,
Brian McDonald
Superintendent

The virus has killed 3,300 people and nearly 100,000 people are infected. Earlier this morning, Los Angeles County declared an emergency as six new cases were reported.
