A security camera system that became operational in August in the La Cañada Flintridge area has helped authorities identify numerous stolen vehicles or those wanted in connection with various crimes, authorities said today.

The program involves the city of La Cañada Flintridge, the sheriff’s Crescenta Valley Station and cameras from the Flock Safety company, said La Cañada Flintridge Assistant City Manager Carl Alameda. The system uses license plate reader technology.

“The early results of the Flock Safety system are impressive, and thanks to the fine work of our Sheriff’’s Department, the technology has contributed to greater public safety and security in our community,” said La Cañada Flintridge Mayor Michael T. Davitt.

Some of the notable arrests and recoveries due to the system include:

• In September, the Flock Safety database returned critical information to help locate a vehicle involved in a residential burglary;

• In October, five stolen or wanted vehicles were recovered in a matter of weeks with the help of security footage and data, and in one incident, a vehicle stolen in Escondido raised Flock Safety alerts and was recovered in La Cañada Flintridge, leading to an arrest in connection with
other crimes;

• In November, the system alerted deputies to a stolen vehicle, allowing field units to conduct a traffic stop leading to a grand theft auto arrest;

• In January, the system identified a vehicle associated with a suspect wanted for alleged kidnapping, and an arrest resulted; and

• In April, the Sheriff’s Department was alerted to a stolen vehicle at Oak Grove Drive and Foothill Boulevard, and the driver was arrested.

“The successes of the Flock Safety program are due to a team effort between the Crescenta Valley station, the city of La Cañada Flintridge and Flock Safety,” Alameda said.
