The Tournament of Roses Association partnered with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department over the weekend to host a drive-thru distribution event in Pasadena in which more than 500 families received food boxes, organizers said.

The giveaway took place Saturday at Norma Coombs Elementary School in order to help those still working to get back on their feet following more than a year of the pandemic.

In addition to staple food items, each box also included a childrens’ book “to keep youth reading this summer,” Tournament of Roses spokesperson Candy Carlson said.

Community partners including the Pasadena Unified School District and the Pasadena Educational Foundation also contributed to the event, which was promoted to families in need by the Salvation Army, the Pasadena Community Coalition and Day one, she said.

Carlson said the Tournament hopes to take part in other similar events through the summer and fall.

More information on the Tournament of Roses is available on the organization’s website at tournamentofroses.com.
