Supermarket Shoplifter Arrested

A shoplifting turned robbery went bad on Tuesday afternoon at a local supermarket located in the Hastings Ranch Village, Lt. Russ of the Pasadena Police Dept. said.

The alleged shoplifting/robbery occurred just before 4 p.m. on Tuesday.

A 50-year-old Ontario male and parolee detainee was arrested for an attempted shoplifting-robbery at the local supermarket, Russ said.

Russ confirmed John Deighan was arrested on Tuesday afternoon after he was suspected of shoplifting a few items from the Ralph’s located at 3601 E. Foothill Blvd. at Hastings Ranch Plaza on the east side of town.

Deighan was observed placing some batteries and shampoo underneath his clothing by store employees, Russ said.

Russ added that three store employees approached Deighan. In an attempt to detain him, the incident escalated into an physical confrontation, Russ said.

Officers were immediately contacted upon the tip. When they arrived, Deighan was reportedly injured due to fighting with the employees.

An officer was also injured when trying to arrest Deighan, Russ said. Once officers were able to detain Deighan, the suspect reportedly required emergency medical care for his injuries, which included an abrasion to his cheeks, forehead, elbows and knees.

Deighan, a white male, allegedly attempted to shoplift about $137 worth of shampoo and batteries, Russ said.

The bail amount and charges against Deighan were not announced.
