Police arrested a man Wednesday afternoon after they say he robbed another man of a backpack at knifepoint in Pasadena.

The crime took place about 1:40 p.m. in the 200 block of South Raymond Avenue, Pasadena police Lt. Sean Dawkins said.

The victim, a 19-year-old Pasadena man, reported that another man had brandished a knife at him and demanded his backpack, Dawkins said.

Responding officers spotted a man matching the description running north along Arroyo Parkway and detained him, Dawkins said. The victim’s backpack, as well as the knife believed to have been used in the robbery, were recovered.

Matthew Lorenzo Patterson, 20, was booked on suspicion of armed robbery, according to police and Los Angeles County booking records. Both the suspect and victim were described as transients.

Bail was set at $50,000 pending Patterson’s initial court appearance, scheduled Friday in the Pasadena branch of Los Angeles County Superior Court.
