A Pasadena beauty supply store already fighting to stay afloat amid the pandemic suffered another setback Wednesday when a group of three thieves targeted the business to steal more than $6,000 worth of high-end wigs made from human hair, according to police and the business owner.

The crime unfolded about 11:45 a.m. at Evette’s Beauty Supply, 1581 E. Colorado Blvd.

Owner Evette Ingram, who was not present at the time of the theft, said three people entered the store and began perusing the store as if they were customers.

All three suddenly grabbed expensive wigs and bolted out the door, Pasadena police Lt. Monica Quellar said.

The employee working at the time was shaken up but unhurt, Ingram said.

The thieves fled with three wigs valued at $1,500 and another valued at $1,800, she said.

Police and witnesses described the thieves as three transgender Black women in their 20s. The crime was captured on store surveillance cameras.

Store employees believed at least one of the thieves had visited the store last week and made a small purchase, according to Ingram. Additionally, they believed they recognized the voice of one of the suspects as the same one that had called the store and inquired about wigs in the hours before the theft took place.

The business, which is a beauty supply store specializing in high-end wigs often worn by women dealing with hair loss due to cancer treatments, was already long struggling in the economic environment created, Ingram said.

The small chain, with additional locations in Canoga Park, Tarzana and Agoura Hills, had not been able to obtain federal Paycheck Protection Program loans or other assistance, she said.

“It’s just hard right now, with COVID and everything, and trying to hold on to my stores,” Ingram said. “This was the last thing I needed.”

More information on the business is available on its Facebook page at facebook.com/EvettesBeautySupply1.
