Legendary singer Tina Turner has died at 83 according to news reports.

Turner, who became known as the “Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll” during her career, which spanned six decades, died after a long illness.

Turner’s music career began in the 1960s alongside that of her husband, Ike Turner. They topped the charts and earned a Grammy for their cover of “Proud Mary,” while their song “River Deep, Mountain High,” was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999.

Her death comes one month before she and several other Black female singers were to be honored by the Pasadena POPS and Symphony in “Hear us Roar!” The show is described as a celebration of powerful Black women who shaped the American songbook.

Turner’s life and battle with physical abuse at the hands of her husband Ike Turner was turned into the hit movie “What’s Love Got to do With It?” and a Broadway musical. She was diagnosed with cancer in 2016 and underwent a kidney transplant a year later.

Ike was arrested by Pasadena police in 1985 for conspiring to sell cocaine. Police found four grams of cocaine at Turner’s condominium and a pound of another unidentified narcotic
