Mayor Terry Tornek and Challenger Councilmember Victor Gordo will square off in the first candidate forum of the runoff election season at 6:30 p.m. tonight in City Council Chambers at City Hall.
No audience is allowed at the event which Pasadena Media will air on the Arroyo Channel and via Zoom.
The League of Women Voters, Pasadena Area, and the Pasadena Chamber of Commerce are co-hosting the candidate forum in the leadup to the Nov. 3 election.
“Each mayoral candidate will have the opportunity to present an opening statement,” according to a recently released statement. “Each will respond to all questions posed by the moderator, respond, and be able to follow up with further comments. Each will provide a closing statement, as well.”
Gordo finished ahead of Tornek in the March primary. However, that race happened weeks before the pandemic shut things down, closing hundreds of local businesses and leaving many others on the brink of shuttering.
Since March, the COVID-19 pandemic and social justice issues have dominated the national conversation.
In the wake of the May 25 officer-involved death of George Floyd, the council unanimously passed a police oversight measure that will create a commission and lead to the hiring of an independent auditor.
But things took another turn after a Pasadena police officer fatally shot Anthony McClain last month, bringing home the issue of African-American men being killed by police.
