Shortly after a mayoral forum planned for Sunday afternoon at Tournament House was canceled after it was learned a person at the venue had tested positive for COVID-19, Councilmember and mayoral candidate Victor Gordo called for the event to be rescheduled.

“I was looking forward to this debate and remain ready, willing, and able to debate Mr. Tornek anytime and anywhere,” Gordo said of his opponent, Mayor Terry Tornek.

“The residents of Pasadena deserve to hear from the two candidates for mayor so that we can both defend our records and answer tough questions about the important issues facing our community,” Gordo said.

“I challenge Mr. Tornek to a new debate at a time convenient for the public this week, held in a safe condition in-person, like the public was promised, so that Pasadena residents aren’t deprived of this critical opportunity to see the contrast between the candidates,” Gordo said.

According to reports, neither organizers nor candidates came into contact with the person who tested positive for the virus.

News of the event’s cancellation began to spread about a half-hour before the debate was scheduled to begin.

“Out of an abundance of caution we have learned of an exposure to COVID and the best decision was to postpone today’s debate,” said “Conversation Live” Host James Farr, one of the event’s organizers. “Having cared for someone with COVID, I understand the reason for such concern and precautionary measures. We worked extremely hard for the last two and a half months vetting and curating questions that we wanted the candidates to answer and that the voters wanted answers to.”

Tornek said he was disappointed that the debate had to be rescheduled.

“While the election is important, as your mayor my top priority is the health and safety of all Pasadena residents,” Tornek said. “When my campaign was informed of some health issues, we suggested that the organizers immediately engage Pasadena Health Director Dr. Goh and they followed her recommendations.

“My priority continues to be community safety; campaigning will fall into place. The debate organizers are diligently at work on a new date and I will inform you accordingly.”

Stay safe and comply with the COVID-19 safety rules. Wear your masks, wash your hands and comply with social distancing. Lastly, remember to exercise your right to VOTE.”
