Mayor Tornek Resigns From Position on Airport Authority

Mayor will nominate Councilmember John Kennedy to replace him

The City Council on Monday accepted Mayor Terry Tornek’s resignation from the Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport Authority.

The authority, which contains commissioners from the three cities, owns and operates the Hollywood Burbank Airport and is a separate government agency created under a joint powers agreement between the three cities of Burbank, Glendale and Pasadena in 1977.

According to its website, the mission of the Airport Authority is to provide state-of-the-art regional airport facilities and related services which are efficient, safe, convenient, and user-friendly, while being a good neighbor.

Currently, Councilmember Steve Madison and former PCC Trustee Ross Selvidge also serve on the board.

Tornek said he was stepping down due to responsibilities in Pasadena that have kept him swamped, including the Coronavirus pandemic, current social justice issues and his re-election campaign.

“I didn’t feel I could do it justice,” Tornek said. “A number of members of the city council have expressed interest in serving on the authority. I thought it was maybe a good time to make that transition.”

When former Mayor Bill Bogaard asked Tornek to serve on the authority, the airport found itself in an adversarial relationship with the city of Burbank and there was litigation.

Since that time things have vastly improved, including a successful push for a new terminal.

“We campaigned for and succeeded, and the voters of Burbank approved the new terminal. The financial condition of the airport, pre-COVID at least was in good shape with adequate reserves.”

Tornek said he would nominate John Kennedy who has expressed interest in authority to the authority in his place.

“It has been a privilege to serve in this capacity for eight years,” Tornek wrote in his letter announcing his resignation. “And I have enjoyed working collaboratively to provide safe and convenient facilities at the airport for the benefit of the public.”
