Tree-Related Contracts Worth $4 Million Mulled by Council

It is said Pasadena is a city that loves trees, and Monday the City Council will back that up by considering tree-related contracts worth $4 million.

Both items are among those on the Council meeting’s consent calendar, where one vote sweeps approval for all items.

One is a hardwood tree trimming and maintenance contract which would cost up to $3.5 million over a five-year contract, and the other would supply trees for planting, which would cost the city $411,250 over five years.

The proposed contracts as submitted by the Department of Public Works are with Mariposa Tree Management Inc. for the tree trimming and maintenance and A.Y. Nursery Inc. for trees for planting.

The Public Works Department schedules a pruning cycle for more than 57,000 hardwood trees and 7,200 palm trees to improve the health of the urban forest and provide safe conditions within the city.

Pruning is maintained on all hardwood trees located in the public right-of-way, parks, medians, libraries, and other landscaped areas.

Mariposa Tree Management was one of five contractors that submitted bids in response to a notice posted in July. The Public Works Department said the company was the lowest responsible and responsive bidder that met all of the required specifications for the contract.

The first three years of the contract will cost $246,750, which includes a $22,434 contingency, with the option for two additional one-year extensions, in an annual amount of $82,250.

Mariposa has been contracting with the city since 2016. It has a current contract with Pasadena Water and Power for brush clearance worth over $200,000.

As recommended by the Public Works Department, A.Y. Nursery Inc. will take care of tree replacement and watering of street trees in Pasadena’s urban forest. Trees are planted annually from October through May.

The city expects to purchase up to 400 trees annually within the available budget through this contract with AY Nursery. The City has a separate contract with FS Construction for the planting of the purchased trees, awarded by the City Council in December 2021.

AY Nursery will be paid $224,316 for the first three years of the contract and $82,250 for each year of the optional two-year extensions.
