Am 8:20 a.m.  power outage this morning knocked out electricity to a swatch of southeast Pasadena but was quickly restored to almost all homes.

Jennifer Guess, public information coordinator for Pasadena Water and Power, said the underground equipment failure blew a manhole cover off in a street and produced visible smoke but no fire.

By 9 a.m. 92 percent of the affected homes had their power restored, Guess said. By 9:40 a.m. all but five homes had power back.

The initial blackouy affected a large area, from Locust Street on the north to Del Mar Boulevard on the south, Hollister Avenue  on the west and Altadena Drive on the east, Guess said.

The repairs should be completed by 3 p.m. today, Guess said.
