University Club of Pasadena’s Education Foundation Awards Merit-Based Scholarships to Low-Income Students

Advancement of higher education was one of the main objectives when the founders of the University Club of Pasadena started it over a century ago.

In support of this objective, the University Club of Pasadena Education Foundation (UCPEF) was formed in 2019 and awards merit-based scholarships to low-income students matriculating from PCC to upper division education at colleges and universities.

The recipients for 2022 are Tiana Le, who’s going to USC to study Health Administration, and Jacob Lau. Both of them are transitioning from their preparatory courses at Pasadena City College.

Le was taking biology as a major at Pasadena City College and was in her last two years when she was informed about the scholarship she’s getting from UCPEF..

“Healthcare has been in my life for many years. I’ve had a lot of relatives go in and out of healthcare systems,” Le said. “What really led me to go into healthcare was just being surrounded in that environment my whole childhood and seeing how much of a difference the hospital systems and the nurses and the doctors – how much support they’ve offered my family all these years. And so I want to be one of those people to give back and offer my own support to patients who really need it.”

Le said the scholarship award was something she was not really expecting.

“I know at USC, they have a huge healthcare system that I would love to work in one day and I know they have a lot of connections and resources that will enable me to work in the industry,” she said. “With this financial support, it actually took a huge weight off my shoulders. The donations and everything that I have received from the University Club is very generous and I’m so grateful that I have this University Club behind me to support me through my journey.”

Jacob Lau said he had to move to the U.S. from Singapore to continue his studies.

He’s now looking forward to studying film. He said the scholarship money he received from UCPEF has been so helpful.

“At one point, I was not able to pay rent, and I needed money to pay rent so I could concentrate on my studies, and that money actually really helped me,” Lau said. “Of course the money that I received from the University Club is also to help for my future studies, the one that I’m transferring to.”

Le and Lau were honored during the Club’s Centennial Celebration in April and at the UCPEF Friendraiser event in September. Members and guests celebrated them as they spoke about their plans for higher education upon completion of their studies at PCC.

Long-time members and inaugural honorees John and Ginny Cushman were also recognized for their generous support of the Foundation and education in the Pasadena community.

This giving season, members and friends of the University Club will be contributing to the University Club of Pasadena Education Foundation to continue offering support to local youth in pursuit of their higher education dreams.
