One man died and another was being detained by police following a stabbing in the parking lot of a CVS Pharmacy in Pasadena on Friday night, authorities said.

The killing took place about 8:15 p.m. outside the business at 20 E. Orange Grove Blvd., according to Pasadena police Lt. Carolyn Gordon.

The victim, described as a man in his early-20s, succumbed to his wounds at a hospital, she said.

Officers quickly arrived on scene and spotted a man matching a witness description of the attacker trying to flee the area, Gordon said. He was taken into custody without a struggle and ultimately arrested in connection with the stabbing.

The suspect’s identity was not immediately available. He was also described as a man in his 20s.

A motive was not clear, although Gordon said investigators did not believe the incident to be gang related.

No further details regarding the circumstances of the deadly stabbing were available as the investigation remained in its early stages.

Police asked the public to avoid the area as the investigation continued Friday night.
