Pasadena Teachers Union Endorses Wu Fredericks for School Board

United Teachers of Pasadena (UTP), the bargaining unit for the Pasadena Unified School District’s teachers, counselors, and librarians has endorsed parent and former classroom teacher Tina Wu Fredericks in the highly contested Pasadena Unified School Board District 6 race.

Wu Fredericks is squaring off against Crystal Czubernat and Priscilla Hernandez for the seat being vacated by Lawrence Torres.

This is the first plurality race in the district in modern times. Whoever gets the most votes on Nov. 3 wins even if no candidate gets more than 50 percent of the vote.  

Wu Fredericks endorsement comes on the heels of a diverse coalition of district-wide stakeholders including Muir alumni and Film Director, and PUSD parent Pablo Miralles, longtime educators Dr. Eddie Newman and Del Yarbrough, Sierra Madre Councilman John Harabedian, Pasadena City College Trustee Sandra Chen Lau, former ACT Chair Bill Hackett, and Progressive Asian Network for Action. 

“I am proud to earn the trust of essential classroom teachers and those on the front line of our campuses as I work to become the next District 6 school board member. I look forward to partnering and advocating on their behalf when elected,” said Wu Fredericks.

According to a prepared statement, Wu Fredericks’s campaign platform includes reimagining education in a way that considers the entire school district community, including the educational inequity exacerbated by distance learning as a result of COVID-19. 

She has been vocal about the lack of transparency in the school closure process, notably, even though the sites selected did not directly affect her own daughters’ schools. Since starting her campaign nearly a year ago, Wu Fredericks has raised over $20,000.
