[Updated Thurs., Dec. 27,2012 | 6:40 a.m.]  Although both incidents appear to be related, police have yet to openly connect the dots between the fatal shooting of a community activist on Christmas Day and the fatal crash that killed a 26-year-old woman and her 11-year-old cousin on Christmas night.

What is known is that an FBI agent and a Pasadena police officer were working to find the killer of Victor J. McClinton, a 49-year-old  Sheriff’s employee and a neighborhood athletics coach, who was killed on Christmas day.

Police said McClinton, who worked as a law enforcement technician with the Sheriff’s Department, was
caught in the line of fire in a car-to-car shooting. He was walking a holiday well-wisher and fellow coach to his car when he was shot.

The lawmen were working to find McClinton’s killer when they chased an SUV that crashed into a van. Killed on impact were van passengers Tracey Ong Tan, 26, of Glendale, and Kendrick Ng, her 11-year-old cousin from Daly City,

The driver of that SUV that crashed into the van was identified as Pasadena resident Darryl Williams. Police said they also recovered a loaded gun from the Christmas night crash scene on Marengo Avenue next to the Foothill (210) Freeway.

And police have yet to find any possible relationship between Williams and the 11 a.m. Christmas morning murder of McClinton.

Police would only say that the SUV involved in the fatal crash was suspected to have been connected to McClinton’s murder.

McClinton was caught in the line of fire in a car-to-car shooting. The father of two was fatally shot at Newport Avenue and Wyoming Street about 11 a.m. on Christmas Day, police said.

Police dispatched to the location on a “shots fired” call found a car had crashed into a light pole. The driver of that car was identified as Damion Taylor, a known gang member, who had suffered a gunshot wound.

Paramedics rushed Taylor, who had no connection to McClinton, to an area hospital, where he is expected to survive his gunshot wound. McClinton was pronounced dead at an area hospital.

Nine hours later, police said an FBI agent and a police gang investigator joined forces to conduct “joint gang enforcement” as a result of the murder.

About 8:15 p.m. on Christmas night, the two lawmen saw a silver Dodge Durango roll a stop sign near Claremont Avenue and Marengo Avenue – near the cordoned-off blocks where police will still searching for clues in McClinton’s murder.

They stopped the SUV, but it drove off. The vehicle chase lasted about 30 seconds, with the SUV smashing into a van turning onto a Foothill (210) Freeway ramp.

The SUV came to a stop on the freeway, where its occupants refused to say who was driving. Police booked all four on suspicion of murder.

They were identified as Jada Mays, 18, Darryl Williams, 22, and Demarius Hanna, 22, all from Pasadena, and Brittany Washington, 21, of Los Angeles.

The suspects sustained moderate injuries and remained in police custody. One of the suspects tried to get rid of a loaded handgun that police later recovered.

The occupants in the van — Tan and her 11-year-old cousin – died at the scene. Three relatives were injured: Kenric Ng, 49, Irene Ng, 52, and a 16-year-old girl, all of San Francisco-adjacent Daly City. The dead woman and boy were cousins, police said.

Pasadena Police detectives responded and continue to investigate this crime and ask that any member of the public with information contact the Pasadena Police Department at (626) 744-4241, or report anonymously through Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-TIPS
(8477) or http://lacrimestoppers.org (insert key word Pasadena).
