Dear Friends and Neighbors,

As 2021 comes to a close and we look ahead to the New Year, I am reminded of how much we have gone through this past year – both the good and the difficult – and how wonderful our community really is.

Our City faced myriad challenges this past year- from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic health concerns, to the pandemic’s economic impacts on our families and local businesses, and the increase in community violence that resulted in the tragic and violent deaths of two young residents.

In the face of these challenges, we did not stand still, we rolled-up our sleeves and worked together as a community. Our Public Health Department, faith communities, and local organizations came together to spur our community to a fully vaccinated rate of 89.5%. Together as neighbors, friends, community partners, and City staff, we worked to become one of the cities with the highest vaccination rates in our State. Our City Council, Public Health, and Planning & Permitting departments worked with our local businesses to insure that they reopened safely and came back stronger to support our local economy like no other California city.

While taking on these challenges, we took concrete steps to become a more just and representative City: the Mayor’s Housing Task Force worked to inform and support the development of our City’s Housing Element and strategize how best to address our affordable housing and homelessness needs. Our Redistricting Task Force engaged our community to develop an excellent plan for redistricting that ensures continued community engagement and strong representation in our local government. Our Community Police Oversight Commission began working in earnest to strengthen the relationship between our community and police department.

Most importantly, we continued to come together as one Pasadena, as a community of families, friends, and neighbors to look out for one another, check in on each other, and to support each other in these challenging times.

As 2022 quickly approaches, I can be optimistic about our future because of how we’ve supported each other through these most challenging moments. With your help, we will continue to focus our efforts on strengthening our community, supporting our most vulnerable, and creatively and collectively addressing our challenges. My optimism is rooted in my belief in you– our families, our youth, our community organizations, and our amazing City staff.

It is an honor to serve as your Mayor, and I commit to continuing our best collective efforts in 2022. Join me as we stride forward into the New Year always together, always resilient, with the strength of community.

Wishing you and yours a wonderful New Year filled with good health, prosperity and much happiness!

  • Pasadena continues to be a great City. Many reasons for that but the quality, energy and commitment of our Council members, under the Mayor’s leadership and their strong support and encouragement for broad citizen participation stands out as a leading factor.
