We Get Letters: United Teachers of Pasadena Picks

I am Jonathan Gardner, the President of the United Teachers of Pasadena (UTP).

UTP represents around 850 Teachers, Counselors, Psychologists, Nurses, Librarians, Speech Language Pathologists in the Pasadena Unified School District.

We are the educators who are entrusted with care on a day-to-day basis of the public school children in Pasadena, Altadena, Sierra Madre.

For the past several decades, the majority of Pasadena School Board members have directed their Superintendents to work to defund classrooms, to disenfranchise parents, especially those whose children are furthest from opportunity.

Through a careful process of interviews and deliberations, the educators in the United Teachers of Pasadena endorsed:

  • Kimberly Kenne for District 1
  • Patrick Amsbry for District 3
  • Patrice McKenzie for District 5
  • Yarma Velázquez for District 7

We have endorsed and worked to promote these candidates due to our confidence that every single one of them will fight for student success and for the empowering of the educators who have the training, privilege, responsibility and experience in caring most directly for our communities’ students.

We must move the locus of power from the bureaucracy of Central Office to the school sites, where teachers, parents and community work together to solve problems and empower the community through the unique perspective and place of the school.

These endorsed candidates will help the schools become empowering and powerful agents of transformation in our communities. Voting otherwise will risk losing recent progress and will disenfranchise further those furthest from opportunities.

Please join UTP in supporting these candidates and voting for the Teacher’s Choice for your PUSD Board Trustee District.
