We Get Letters: Water Issues

Dear Pasadena City Council members and staff:

Increasingly nature is sending us a message and fortunately some are listening.  The message involves protecting the natural world and all the vital elements that foster life — the water, the animals and varied species, the forests and creation in general.  Here in Pasadena we are now facing a decision as to whether or not we are going to heed nature or once again ignore her call.  In the situation before us, we have an opportunity to protect our groundwater, not deplete it and to protect the streams where some fish still exist.

This coming Monday, the Pasadena City Council can decide to protect our groundwater and begin an active program of water conservation.  Or it can ignore the sad state of our underground aquifer and our streams and start pumping more of our precious groundwater.  We have for too long given preference to storm drainage and poorly maintained spreading basins as opposed to active water conservation.  That must change and Pasadena Water and Power knows it.

The world is in a precarious state.  Big cities in the northeast are flooding, other cities in the southwest are sweltering and drying out, and temperatures around the globe are threatening the very existence of all living things.  We must become active in preserving what nature has given us and what we value and not put economics above all other considerations. A progressive city like Pasadena can be a leader in that direction by making the right choices.  We have done it before with the creation of MWD, now let’s do it again.  Let’s work to protect our natural resources, not destroy them.
