Weekend Plans: Outdoor Options Increase, But Caution Abounds

Planning your Sunday?

How about: A leisurely bike ride around the Rose Bowl loop or 18 holes at the Brookside Golf course? Or maybe just a stroll along a trail.

Suddenly, these popular activities are now very doable. But there are limits and everywhere you look there are ready reminders that the COVID-19 crisis is still with us.

As restrictions are being eased, Pasadena residents emerging after weeks of quarantine are cautiously eyeing their outdoor options.

Perhaps most notably, Pasadena’s city parks are now open for recreational use. But there are conditions.

Rose Bowl Loop

  • Open for pedestrians, runners and cyclists.
  • 90 minute parking available.
  • Closed to vehicular traffic except vehicles accessing COVID-19 testing site and Brookside Golf Course.
  • Practice physical distancing and provide at least six feet of space at all times during your visit.
  • Face coverings should be worn to protect others – even when exercising – as long as your airflow is not restricted.
  • Do not gather in groups.
  • Gather with members of your household only.
  • Communicate with others as you pass. Alert one another when passing by and allow room to safely pass.
  • Users must take their trash with them to protect other loop users and staff.
  • Staff will be positioned along the loop to make sure users are abiding by the guidelines listed above.

Trails 

  • Practice physical distancing and provide at least six feet of space at all times.
  • Face coverings should be worn to protect others – even when exercising – as long as your airflow is not restricted.
  • Do not gather in groups.
  • Gather with members of the same household only.
  • Do not visit public trails and trailheads if feeling sick and/or exhibiting any symptoms of illness.
  • Follow all posted regulations on trails and at trailheads.
  • Communicate with others as you pass. Alert one another when passing by and allow room to safely pass.
  • Bring water, hand sanitizer, and/or disinfecting wipes to wash or sanitize hands frequently.
  • Users must take their trash with them to protect other trail users, wildlife, and staff.

Tennis and Pickleball Courts (opened Saturday, May 16)

  • Physical distancing of 6 feet must be maintained at all times.
  • Only singles play will be permitted.
  • Each participant must bring their own balls with their initials on each ball. Participants will only be permitted to handle their own tennis and pickle balls unless participants are wearing gloves. If gloves are worn, both players can handle the same tennis or pickle ball.
  • Participants will be required to wear face coverings at all times except during play.
  • Bring water and hand sanitizer or disinfecting wipes to wash and sanitize hands frequently.
  • A maximum of one-hour play will be allowed.
  • Doors, entrances, and/or gates shall be open during normal operational hours.

Archery Range and Casting Pond (opened Saturday, May 16)

  • Face coverings will be required at all times.
  • Physical distancing of 6 feet is required all times.
  • Facility operator shall place delineators at sport stations to create a 6-foot distance between participants.
  • Private lessons will be allowed while practicing physical distancing. There shall be no group lessons involving more than 2 people.

Community Gardens

  • Face coverings are required at all times.
  • Physical distancing of 6 feet is required at all times.
  • Bring hand sanitizer or sanitizing wipes, or a resealable bag with soapy water and a washcloth. Wash your hands before and after you go to the garden.
  • Gloves are required while conducting gardening, including while handling tools and equipment.
  • Remove all personal items and trash before leaving the garden.

General Maintenance Protocols

  • Benches and tables shall be cordoned off to discourage group
  • Commonly used items will be sanitized
  • Commonly used equipment shall be sanitized before and after each
  • Restrooms will be sanitized

General Monitoring Protocols

  • Instruction and information signage must be posted throughout the facility regarding infection control, physical distancing and the use of face
  • Facility operator shall monitor compliance of posted
  • Staff will conduct periodic visits to monitor that players are complying with
  • Participants will be asked to leave if not complying with these
