Councilmembers Wilson, Masuda Decline to Endorse a Candidate in Mayor’s Race

Councilmembers say they will remain neutral

The two City Council members who have not taken sides in the upcoming mayor’s race told Pasadena Now on Monday they will remain neutral.

Councilmembers Gene Masuda and Andy Wilson said they will not follow suit with the rest of the council and have declined to endorse Mayor Terry Tornek or Councilmember Victor Gordo in the March 3 election.

“I have so much respect and friendship for both Mayor Tornek and Councilmember Gordo,” said Masuda. “They are smart, experienced, and care so very much for Pasadena. The residents have a difficult decision to make between two outstanding leaders. I will remain neutral and not endorse.”

So far, Councilmembers Steve Madison and Tyron Hampton, who also serves as vice mayor, have endorsed Gordo, while Councilmembers John Kennedy and Margaret McAustin have placed their support behind Tornek.

Councilmember-elect Felicia Williams, who will replace McAustin, has also endorsed Gordo.

“I think I’m going to continue to be Switzerland, as I tell people,” Wilson said. “They’re both kind of highly capable people that I respect greatly. I don’t think one is inherently better than the other. I think it’s really mostly about stylistic approaches to the job, at least from what I’ve seen. Obviously, Victor hasn’t been mayor yet, but I’ve had enough exposure to him, obviously as chair of (the council’s) ED Tech (Committee) and his role on the council. I think we’re in a blessed place to have two people that I think are more than capable and have the experience, who maybe approach the job from slightly different perspectives. I wouldn’t necessarily say, you know, one is better than the other.”

The last mayoral race also pitted two elected officials against each other for the mayor’s chair when then-District 1 Councilmember Jacque Robinson-Baisley ran against Tornek.
In that race, the majority of the council chose not to endorse either candidate.

Robinson-Baisley currently chairs the National Women’s Political Caucus, Greater Pasadena Area (NWPC-GPA). The group is joining with an array of women’s organizations tonight that will host Gordo and Tornek in a mayoral forum.

The candidates squared off in the March primary with Gordo finishing ahead of Tornek and two other candidates. However, since no one received more than 50 percent the votes cast, the election went to a runoff.
