Women Swim Opens SCC With Dual Wins Over LBCC, Chaffey

The Pasadena City College women's swim team started off on the right stroke with South Coast Conference-opening victories over Chaffey, 153-109, and host Long Beach City College, 160-101, on Friday. 

The Lancers (2-1 in overall dual meets) dominated with individual event wins in 12 of the 15 events. Sophomore Shannon Cheung captured first place in the 200-yard freestyle (2:02.65), the 100-freestyle (58.29), the 500-free (5:24.27, by 15 seconds over the second place finisher) and anchored an exciting 400 freestyle relay win with freshmen Stephy Lao, Victoria Leflang and Lauren Walls (4:01.26) as the Lancers edged Chaffey by just .38 of a second. 

Freshman Connie Peng won the 50-backstroke (29.02), the 100-backstroke (1:04.34), and the 50-butterfly (27.50) while sophomore Arolyn Basham swam to event victories in the 50-breaststroke (33.08), 50-freestyle (26.31), and 100-breaststroke (1:13.52). Freshman Tiffany Wong won the 100-butterfly (1:06.06) and placed second in the 100-free (58.97) and 50-butterfly (29.26).  The three swimmers and anchor Courtney Fukushima won the 200 medley relay at 2:00.31. 

Leflang scored second in the 1,000-freestyle (11:50.61), picked up third in the 100 individual medley (1:11.45), and finished fourth in the 500-freestyle (5:57.03). 

Cheung made honorable mention in the CCCSIA State February Women's Athlete of the Month award for her performances at the Mt. San Antonio Invitational and SCC Pentathlon. 

MEN 0-2 IN DOUBLE DUAL

The PCC men's team suffered defeats to Long Beach, 181-64, and Chaffey, 164-76, despite another strong meet by top swimmer Mohammed Esmaeilian. The freshman won the 50-yard freestyle (22.35), the 100-free (48.46), and the 100-butterfly (57.71) as he outtouched Chaffey's David Dominguez by only .16 of a second. 

Freshman Ethan Nava took second in the 200-butterfly (2:18.89) and was fourth in the 100-fly at 1:00.29. 

On Friday, Mar. 21, head coach Terry Stoddard's Lancers teams will be in action in a SCC double dual between Mt. San Antonio and East Los Angeles at ELAC's Swim Stadium.
