Women’s Runner Medina Excels at Rio Hondo Cross Country Meet

Pasadena City College women’s cross country sophomore Ashley Medina ran a time of 19 minutes, 15 seconds to place eighth overall covering the 5-kilometer, El Monte Legg Lake course at the Rio Hondo Classic held September 5. Medina (Arroyo High) helped the Lancers take fifth place out of seven scoring teams.

Riverside City College won the team title while Amina Olowora of Southwestern placed first among the 77 racers participating in a blistering 16:33 time.

For the Lancers, Edna Bailon was 14th at 19:37, followed by fellow sophomore Kate Manzke in 29th (20:27), letterman Marina Flores in 42nd (21:31), and freshman Rebecca Serrano in 65th (23:25).

MEN PLACE 8TH AT RIO HONDO CLASSIC

For the second straight meet, freshman Nathan Guzman (Salesian High) was the Pasadena City College men’s cross country team’s top runner as he placed 20th (21:14) while PCC took eighth out of 11 scoring teams at the Rio Hondo Classic. A field of 103 runners covered the 4-mile course.

Frosh runner Celso Martinez was 33rd (21:49) while sophomore Russell Yu finished in 44th (22:13). Other Lancers’ finishers were freshman Pedro Lopez in 60th (22:49), freshman Emilio Barragan-Steimer in 63rd (23:00), sophomore Sergio Andrade in 68th (23:14), newcomer Eric Bravo in 77th (23:56) and rookie Gabe Walden in 79th (24:10).

Southwestern’s George Martinez won the race in 19:35 as his college also won the team title.

PCC head coach Armand Crespo directs his Lancers teams next at the SoCal Preview Meet to be held Friday, Sept. 19 at Woodley Park in Van Nuys.
