You Have An Extra 90 Days to File Your Taxes, But… Submit Them Sooner If You Are Expecting a Refund

April 15 is tax day, but due to the Coronavirus outbreak you do have some time.

The IRS is giving taxpayers an additional 90 days to get their taxes done according to local tax preparer Ismael Trone, but if you are expecting a refund you should file as soon as possible.

“If you do not file by July 15 or pay your tax liability by July 15, you will incur interest and penalties from that point going forward,” said Ismael Trone. “The IRS is just urging taxpayers who are due a refund to file as soon as possible so that they can, you know, get their refunds within 15 to 21 days.”

Trone also reminded local residents that have not filed over the past few years to contact their tax preparer to provide information.

Otherwise, they could miss out a stimulus check from the federal government, checks for $1,200 and $2,400 qualifying single and married couples, respecitvely have already started going out.

The IRS announced on March 21 that the federal income tax filing due date was automatically extended from April 15 to July 15.

Taxpayers do not need to file any additional forms or call the IRS to qualify for this automatic federal tax filing and payment relief.

Taxpayers that need additional time to file beyond the July 15 deadline can request a filing extension by filing Form 4868 through their tax professional, tax software or using the Free File link on IRS.gov. Businesses who need additional time must file Form 7004.

“Even with the filing deadline extended, we urge taxpayers who are owed refunds to file as soon as possible and file electronically,” said IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig in a prepared statement. “Filing electronically with direct deposit is the quickest way to get refunds. Although we are curtailing some operations during this period, the IRS is continuing with mission-critical operations to support the nation, and that includes accepting tax returns and sending refund.”
