You Won’t Want to Miss El Portal’s Annual Tequila Tasting

After more than 19 years in the business and with over 50 bottles of tequila under its belt, El Portal knows a few things about tequila.

Tequila is a distilled spirit made from agave. There are three main classifications of tequila – Blanco, Reposado and Añejo – that describe the differences in aging time.

“Tequilas don’t need to be aged very long but the older ones are smoother. We prefer to drink it straight,” said Abel Ramirez, the owner of El Portal. Most tequilas are served chilled or in a chilled shot glass when they’re not in a margarita.

He started hosting the annual Tequila Tasting to give people a chance to experience the different flavors of Mexico’s most famous drink. The tasting includes private label bottles in addition to well known brands like George Clooney’s Casamigos, Patron and Azulejo.

Ramirez describes the Tequila Tasting as a celebration of tequila and Mexican food. The event is held on El Portal’s patio and will feature live guitar music and appetizers. Once you find your favorite brand, visit the bar for a custom mixed margarita.
