Alverno Heights Academy Students Get Up Close with Snakes and More During Hands-On Reptile Visit

Learning at Alverno Heights Academy took a thrilling turn this week when the Learning Technology Center (LTC) came alive with curiosity, excitement and a few slithers and scales as Thor’s Reptile Family visited students for a special hands-on educational experience.

The unique program offered by Thor’s Reptile Family brought a fascinating collection of snakes, lizards, turtles and other creatures right to the school program — giving students the rare chance to learn about wildlife and ecosystems face-to-face.

From the moment the reptiles appeared, young learners were captivated. With expert guidance from their handler, students were able to observe – and in many cases touch – animals they’d previously only seen in books or videos. The interactive presentation emphasized not only the biology of each animal, but also how these often-misunderstood creatures play important roles in nature.

“It’s one thing to read about reptiles in class,” said one Alverno educator, “but it’s an entirely different experience when students can see and interact with them up close. It makes science come alive in ways textbooks just can’t.”

Thor’s Reptile Family — known throughout Southern California for their hands-on educational shows that entertain as much as they inform — has been bringing safe, interactive wildlife presentations to schools, libraries, and community events for more than two decades. Their programs aim to spark curiosity about the natural world while teaching important lessons in wildlife conservation, animal adaptations and ecological balance.

Back on campus, Alverno students asked thoughtful questions and eagerly shared facts they’d learned as the reptiles made their rounds from classroom to classroom. For many, the experience was a highlight of the school year — one that blended educational rigor with pure wonder.

Alverno Heights Academy continues to provide enriching opportunities like these as part of its mission to nurture the whole child through engaging, exploratory and faith-centered education.
