Alverno Heights’ School Year Theme is Amanda Gorman’s “Be Brave Enough to be the Light”

Alverno Heights Academy school year 2021-22 theme is “Be Brave Enough to be the Light!” Inspired by poet Amanda Gorman’s piece “The Hill We Climb”, recited at this past year’s Inauguration, and the school know this is the perfect theme for this year.

The last two lines of her invigorating and empowering poem reads, “When day comes we step out of the shade, aflame and unafraid, the new dawn blooms as we free it. For there is always light, if only we’re brave enough to see it. If only we’re brave enough to be it.” It is with this mentality that Alverno Heights break into the school year, positive, joyful, inspired and filled with light. The school is reminded to that out of darkness comes light and they are ready to basque in the beauty and the light. AHA know its girls are “Brave Enough to be the Light!”

AHA Students have celebrated this theme all week! Campus Ministry held a beautiful prayer service where students wrote intentions on paper light bulbs that will be hung around campus. ASU handed out goodie bags centering around the theme and began the “(Sun)Ray of the Day” – an inspiring daily quote read over the loud speaker. The bulletin boards around campus are splashed with the theme. The leadership team gifted Faculty and Staff with their own lanterns to light their journeys this year. “We are excited to continue celebrating the theme next week with the Faculty & Staff Performance as well as the ASU Welcome Skit! Join us in being the light for your family and community this year!”

About Alverno Heights Academy

Alverno Heights Academy is an all-girls, independent, progressive Catholic, college preparatory school dedicated to its mission of empowering each young woman to be exactly the person she wants to be. Located on the property of the former Barlow Estate in Sierra Madre, California, Alverno Heights Academy was founded in 1960 by the Sisters of St. Francis who sought to create an environment in the San Gabriel Valley where young women could become informed and knowledgeable persons. Later renamed Alverno High School and sponsored by the Immaculate Heart Community, Alverno’s program—academic, spiritual, aesthetic, social, and physical—has been shaped by the staff, trustees, and students. As Alverno Heights Academy once again, the school remains committed to its mission by encouraging each of their young women to be who they imagine.
