AMGEN Biotech Experience Provides St. Francis High School’s Biology Classes with Valuable Training

This week, Mr. Bill Heinen’s Biology classes had the opportunity to use state-of-the-art laboratory equipment/technology, generously provided by AMGEN Biotech Experience (ABE), to experience first-hand the incredible power of science and technology.

The AP Biology class inserted DNA from a sea anemone into E.coli bacteria, which programmed the bacteria to produce red fluorescent protein causing it to glow red. This is the same cutting edge science AMGEN uses to transform bacteria to make human insulin. The other Biology classes learned to use biotech tools to help separate DNA gene fragments through gel electrophoresis.

This experience provided the students with educational/vocational training for future jobs in high-demand scientific career fields. A special thanks to AMGEN Biotech Experience (https://www.amgenbiotechexperience.com/) for making this experience possible for the students at St. Francis High School!
