This school year Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary sent two teams to compete in the Odyssey of the Mind Competition. The two student groups were composed of 7th and 8th grade scholars and led under the direction of Coach Gino, Coach Brian and Coach Christian. Both teams made it to the California State Tournament and one team is advancing to the World Tournament in May.

The 2023 Odyssey of the Mind World Finals will be held May 24-27 at Michigan State University and the Greater Lansing Convention & Visitors Bureau. The countries that participate in this competition of the mind are: Canada, China, Germany, Hong Kong, India , Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Poland, Russia, Singapore, Slovakia, South Korea, Switzerland.

Odyssey of the Mind is a competition that focuses on the problem solving efforts of students through creativity, teamwork, budgeting, time management and public speaking. This year the Worlds team focused on a problem in which they were to design and build a device that completes a simple task without using team assistance. The device needed to pass through four rounds which included (1) make something go upward, (2) air-propelled, (3) make something go backward, and (4) simple task.

In addition to the construction of the simple task device, the team crafted a performance which has a story line with a comedic twist. The team’s performance explained how the device worked and included characters and multiple costume and image changes to show the change of emotions.
