A look at ABVM School’s Learning Support Program
Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary School strives to support the Archdiocesan mission of inclusion by providing academic support for students with diverse learning needs.
Assumption employs a full-time reading specialist with training in dyslexia screening, as well as the Orton Gillingham Approach, a direct, explicit, and multisensory approach for teaching reading, writing and spelling in a one-on-one or small group setting.
In addition to providing individual and small group instruction to students in the primary grades, the reading specialist also serves as the school’s Support Team Education Plan (STEP) coordinator.
According to the Archdiocese, the STEP is equivalent to a public school 504 Plan and is a “collaborative process that brings together students, parents/students, teachers, and administrators to seek positive solutions based on a student’s strengths and special needs to help that student benefit from his or her education and to facilitate participation in the Catholic school curriculum.”
