Barnhart’s Grandparents and Grandfriends Day 2016

Barnhart’s Grandparents and Grandfriends Day 2016 followed its traditional schedule today, with grandparents partaking in breakfast together, visiting classrooms, and participating in class activities. This year new-to-Barnhart grandparent, James Symons, addressed the crowd asking them what they might choose as the best time of their lives. A retired Presbyterian minister who created an interfaith church in Olympia, Washington, Symons once marched alongside Martin Luther King. Symons’ presentation referenced one of his favorite authors, Sara Lawrence-Lightfoot’s “The Third Chapter.”

“Here is my challenge…the answer to the question ‘what is the best time of your life?’ is right now…this moment! You can claim this moment in a way that you can’t claim anything in the past or future because now you can act on it and believe in it. Carpe Diem. Seize the Day. This Day!” concluded James Symons, grandfather of Peter and Marina Symons Galassi in Barnhart’s fourth grade class.

“It seems like the perfect season in this time of thanks and giving to come together with our extended community found in our students’ grandparents and grandfriends. This is always one of Barnhart’s most special days.” says Tonya Beilstein, Interim Head of School.
