Blair Theater Program Brings Classroom Learning to Life Through Disney Workshop Experience

Blair High School drama students recently stepped outside the traditional classroom and into an immersive professional learning environment thanks to an educational field trip supported by a PEF Field Trip Grant. The experience was organized by drama teacher Jessica Volpi, who guided students through a specialized theater training program at Disneyland.

At the heart of the visit was the Disney Imagination Campus program, specifically the “Broadway Magic” workshop, which is designed to mirror industry-level musical theater training. Students received instruction from working professionals in key performance areas such as character voice, physical expression, ensemble work, and character development. The workshop also expanded into the technical side of theater, introducing participants to foundational concepts in set design, including modeling and visual planning techniques used in stage production.

A unique aspect of the experience was the integration of site-specific performance learning. Using the Disneyland environment as a living classroom, students explored how theatrical storytelling adapts to unconventional performance spaces. They also studied live Disney street performances to better understand how movement, music, and narrative combine to engage audiences in real time.

“Throughout the day, students also observed specific live performances, analyzing how professional artists use music, movement, and storytelling to engage audiences. It was an unforgettable experience filled with meaningful learning, creative exploration, and joyful memories.” -Jessica Volpi, Blair

Beyond the immediate workshop experience, the training is expected to have a lasting impact on the school’s theater program. Students who participated will share their newly gained skills by leading peer-to-peer workshops at Blair High School, helping to extend the learning to other drama students. These activities will also support the program’s alignment with broader state and national theater education standards, emphasizing the creative and analytical aspects of performance.

With new tools and perspectives gained from the experience, Volpi and her students are preparing to bring fresh energy and techniques into their upcoming productions, strengthening the school’s theater community moving forward.
