Catholic Theologian, Speaker, and Author, Dr. Scott Hahn, Celebrates St. Monica Academy Graduation

On June 6, Fr. Philip Sullivan, Pastor of St. Therese Church in Alhambra, CA, celebrated St. Monica Academy’s Baccalaureate Mass with concelebrant Fr. Samuel Ward, Director of Vocations for the L.A. Archdiocese. After the Mass, Dr. Scott Hahn delivered the commencement address and conferred diplomas upon St. Monica Academy’s 8th Grade and 12th Grade graduates. In his address, Dr. Scott Hahn reminded the graduates that there is hope for the future since they have “acquired an appreciation” for the True, the Good, and the Beautiful through their classical education. The ceremony closed with the graduates singing the words of their Alma Mater: “Crusaders, fight the good fight throughout your future lives. Proclaim the truth with courage knowing Christ is at your side.”

Below is an excerpt from Dr. Scott Hahn’s Commencement Address to the 2019 St. Monica Academy Graduates:

Here at St. Monica Academy, with classical education you have acquired an appreciation not just for subjects, but for the True, the Good, and the Beautiful. And this has opened your mind, but also your heart. And I want to say to the parents and all the other family members that are here, that if this is the face of the future, we have great reason to be hopeful. The future is bright because these young men and women who are your sons and daughters are our younger brothers and sisters in Christ, endowed with the Holy Spirit. As Jesus said in Luke 12, “I have come to set the earth on fire, and how I wish it were already ablaze!” This is what St. Catherine of Siena was referring to also when she said, “Be who God meant you to be, and you will set the world on fire!” Your world, your family, your friendships, where you go off to study, where you go off to work, as you prepare to raise your own family, the fire that the Holy Spirit represents is indeed the fire of Divine Love.

St. Monica Academy, an independent, Catholic, coeducational school for grades 1-12, is at the forefront of a renaissance in classical education, a time-honored method of teaching that inspires students to excel academically and morally. Founded by parents in 2001, the school provides 242 students in grades 1-12 with an academically rigorous education using a classical curriculum.
