Celebrating Individuality Through Art: Poly Kindergarten’s Colorful Self-Portraits

As part of Polytechnic School’s kindergarten “All About Me” unit, students engaged in a creative project inspired by the book The Colors of Us by Karen Katz. The story illustrates how blending red, white, yellow, and black paint in just the right amounts can create each person’s unique skin tone. The students mixed their own paint shades and gave them imaginative names. They then used their custom colors to paint large self-portraits, celebrating their individuality. This project served as a meaningful lesson on melanin, emphasizing the beauty of our diverse identities.
