Flintridge Sacred Heart Participates in Stanford Invitational Speech & Debate Tournament

Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy (FSHA) have some good news to report from the Stanford Invitational from last weekend! The pandemic prevented its team from traveling to Palo Alto and bringing home physical trophies, but the team competed with great pride and success.

Over 400 schools participated at this three-day tournament. Because this tournament was completely online, teams competed from most of the fifty states and from across the oceans from China to India!

Charlotte Zhong ’24 and Wendy Wang ’23 competed from their homes in China and, due to the time difference, took some some naps between rounds!

It was a true team effort making sure Wendy knew that she broke to semi-finals and then that she reached the Final Round in her event, Novice Informative Speaking. Charlotte calling from China, Michelle Zhou using WeChat, and Ms. McHugh using Google email all worked to contact her (eventually waking her up) to tell her to get to her final round! She got to her round on time and placed 5th! Wendy’s speech is called “Embarrassment Explained” and she’s holding a picture of her little sister.

Other notable efforts:

1. Seniors, Victoria Hernandez and Lily Jiang reached the first elimination round (Octafinals) in Public Forum Debate.
2. Sophomore, Kana Park, reached the semi-final round in Original Oratory and was disappointed to miss the final round by just one rank. (she placed 7th out of 106 competitors in her event and the top 6 got to the final round)
3. Sophomores Ava Zhang and Isabella Zirn improved their tournament record and went 3-3 in preliminary rounds this weekend.

Also, FSHA had help from two alums – Daniela Gurrola ’19 (last photo) and Jocelle Lauron ’20 judged on behalf of the team.
