FSHA Speech and Debate Team Member Demonstrates How an Impromptu Speech Works

At a recent Flintride Sacred Heart Academy (FSHA) student showcase assembly, speech and debate team member Kama Park demonstrated how an impromptu speech works. Audience members offered up three topics— Barbie dolls, paper clips, and the internet.

She then had two minutes to choose decide on one and come up with a five minute speech about that topic! It was fun to see how quickly she was able to craft and deliver an engaging and creative speech about the internet. FSHA’s ComedySportz improv team got everyone laughing as they played some of their favorite improv games, sought audience participation, and gave everyone a chance to try out one of the games in small groups.

Studies across the country have found that high school debate improves reading ability, grades, school attendance, self-esteem, and interest in school.  Duffin, Frank, Latitudes in Learning, “Debate Across the Curriculum Results” (2005).  Many universities even offer scholarships specifically for college debaters.
