Honoring Patriotism and Leadership: SMUSD Celebrates the J.P. Blecksmith Award
As the nation commemorates its 250th birthday, the San Marino Unified School District (SMUSD) reflects on the courage, service, and sacrifice of those who have shaped the United States, while reaffirming its commitment to instilling the values of citizenship and patriotism in the next generation. Each year during the Carver and Valentine Elementary fifth-grade promotion ceremonies, four students are selected to receive the J.P. Blecksmith Award in recognition of their outstanding character, citizenship, and patriotism.
The award honors J.P. Blecksmith, a former Carver Elementary student who gave his life while serving the nation during Operation Iraqi Freedom II. His legacy continues to inspire future generations through this meaningful tradition, with the award presented annually by former Carver teacher Susan Flanagan alongside J.P.’s brother. Visitors to the front offices at both Carver and Valentine Elementary Schools can also view the commemorative plaque recognizing J.P.’s service and the distinguished students who have earned this honor over the years.
As the community celebrates Independence Day, San Marino Unified pays tribute to the men and women who have served the nation while recognizing the young leaders whose integrity, character, and commitment to service will help shape its future.
