Immaculate Heart High School Students Honor Black History Month

Members of Immaculate Heart High School’s Black Student Association led the school in a celebration of Black History Month and the richness of the school’s diversity with a special assembly.

Junior Emilee Anderson opened the event with a rousing version of “I Know Where I’ve Been” while fellow BSA members carried signs as they marched through the auditorium onto the stage. The signs, created by senior Morgan Rhodes, bore messages such as “Together We Stand United” and “We Are the Faces of Equality.”

Following BSA’s presentation, two guest speakers shared their experiences and advice with students. Educator Théard Johnson, Vice President of Operations and Coordinator of Volunteer Services for the Los Angeles Kingdom Day Parade Committee, highlighted a few of the many contributions that African-American citizens have made to the country. His daughter Jennifer Tapia, a singer/songwriter, shared two songs in which she reflected on the ways her faith strengthens and inspires her.

Transfiguration Elementary School students in grades second through eighth capped the assembly with inspiring performances from their Praise Team, African Drum Line, and African Dancers.

The entire event was organized by BSA moderators Carol Cobbs, Immaculate Heart’s assistant registrar, and IH academic counselor Alessandra Molina, Class of 2007. Cobbs has been involved with the BSA for the past five years and recently coordinated BSA’s participation in the 2019 Kingdom Day Parade, where students marched to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Marin Luther King Jr.
