International School of Los Angeles Fifth Graders Embark on Cultural Adventure in France

Each year, a tradition unfolds that takes fifth graders from the International School of Los Angeles (LILA) on a transformative journey to France, forging lasting memories and fostering educational growth. This 10-day excursion allows students from all elementary campuses of LILA to dive deep into French culture and history, creating a pivotal experience before they transition to middle school at the Burbank campus.

This year, the young learners explored the historical richness of Normandy, visiting significant sites including the D-Day beaches, where they gained insights into pivotal historical events. Their adventure extended to a local cheese factory, where the art of French gastronomy came alive, followed by a series of walking tours that painted a vivid picture of the region’s heritage.

The cultural immersion continued in Paris, where students reunited with their year-long pen pals. This meeting was more than a friendly gathering; it was an exchange of cultures and languages, enriching the students’ understanding and appreciation of their studies. The itinerary included iconic landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, and the Palace of Versailles, each visit accompanied by educational activities that brought their lessons to life.

Culinary adventures were also a highlight of the trip, with students enjoying raclette among other local delicacies, allowing them to taste the flavors that make French cuisine renowned worldwide.

Reflecting on the trip, it is clear that it offered more than just a travel experience; it was a crucial step in building the students’ autonomy, enhancing their language skills, and strengthening friendships. The journey not only prepared them for the academic challenges of middle school but also left them with a heightened sense of independence and a network of friends to support them in their next educational chapter.
