Introducing the Newly Renovated Westridge Lower School Playground!

Westridge School is excited to reveal photos of its newly renovated Lower School Playground! In October, the existing play structures were demolished to make room for all new play equipment, including a zip line, a rock-climbing structure, an expanded swing set, two gaga ball pits, and two table tennis tables! Lots of Westridge green can be seen in the new space, infusing some Tiger spirit into the swing set, the repaved basketball court, and bean bag chairs and pillows that create a perfect space for reading on the new deck and benches that have been constructed around Ranney Tree. Ideas for the playground came from students, parents, faculty, staff, and even grandparents, whose suggestions melded beautifully to create a space that can support physical activity as well as peaceful reflection.

“Play, creativity, imagination—all are so important to student health and wellbeing,” said Head of School Elizabeth J. McGregor. “Our playground will provide active and reflective spaces for our students, and will be dedicated to two cherished Westridge educators.”

The playground is dedicated to former Director of Lower and Middle School Mary Tuck, who retired in 2019 year after 19 years at Westridge. The deck surrounding Ranney Tree was constructed as a place to sit and read in memory of Carol van Zalingen, the late dean of Lower and Middle School student support who passed away in April from complications related to COVID-19. There will also be a new bench installed in her honor between Ranney House and the library, where Ms. V used to sit and greet students each morning.

Westridge School can’t wait to see students run, play, and make joyful memories in this new space when it is safe to return to campus! This entirely donor-funded project would not have been possible without the generous support of our parent and grandparent donors, the Class of 2020, the Board of Trustees, and all who donated to this endeavor.
