La Salle College Preparatory’s Fishing and Conservation Club Update
Back in the 1970’s La Salle had a fishing club, but the current Fishing and Conservation club was started in Fall 2017 with an expanded mission. The purpose of the club is to bring together students (and faculty) who like to fish and to help the environment. Club members have participated in overnight trips to catch white seabass and yellowtail at Catalina Island, offshore trips from San Diego to fish for tuna, river and fly fishing in CA and Colorado for trout, and even a trip to Guatemala for sailfish and dorado.
Conservation activities have included trips to clean up trash along rivers, lakes, and the beach. Club members have also participated in data collection at Newport Bay, and have helped raise awareness about conservation issues like the Pebble Mine in Bristol Bay, Alaska where mining interests were trying to develop, which would affect the best salmon fishery in the world. The Fishing and Conservation Club has remained active throughout the pandemic with distanced fishing and conservation activities and is led by President Kashmir Mohandie ’21, James Desjarlais’21 and faculty moderator Mr. Pendergast.
